Monsoon response: latest update from Nepal

Heavy rain during the last few days of September caused many fatalities and widespread damage across Nepal.

Our partner Asal Chhimekee Nepal (ACN) helped 410 families and 300 new mothers in Nawalparasi and Rautahat districts in early October, which experienced severe flooding. Homes were inundated with floodwater and many people lost vital crops which they rely on for food and livelihoods.

ACN is the social action arm of the Pokhara Christian Community and has vast experience helping disadvantaged communities affected by natural disasters, including floods, landslides and earthquakes.

Donations to our Nepal Monsoon Appeal have already helped support about 1,000 people affected by floods and landslides during the 2024 monsoon season.

Relief work carried out by ACN in in the earlier part of monsoon season across various districts included responding after a landslide in Baglung district left 70 families with fully or partially damaged homes or at risk of further landslides, and sadly one young boy lost his life in the disaster. Despite damaged roads, the ACN team persevered, hiring local jeeps to transport supplies to different locations. They provided food items, tarps, kitchen utensils, water filters, and hygiene kits, as well as cash as seed money for livelihood or other emergency needs. During those critical early days, the local church building served as a refuge for people, providing shelter and treatment for the injured.

ACN’s work has also helped monsoon-affected families in Kaski, where they distributed tin sheets to 26 families after landslides and the Seti River burst its banks in the Pokhara area. Additionally, a school in Myagdi which was damaged by a landslide received assistance of tin sheets to rebuild damaged rooms and continue teaching.

The ACN team has also provided tin sheets for temporary shelters to 60 families in Rukum, and a team went to support 64 families in Badhigadh.

Your support will help people affected by floods or landslides this monsoon season.

A gift of £53 could provide food and hygiene package for a family in need. Alternatively, £23 could help support a new mother with a shawl, baby blanket and other key items.
