Monsoon relief reaches remote communities

As monsoon rains continue to cause landslides and floods in Nepal, regular news reports cover new natural disasters, including recent incidents in and around the Kathmandu valley.

However, the focus of our partners is helping communities in remote districts whose troubles are often under-reported.

The team from Asal Chhimekee Nepal (ACN) is responding in districts including Rukum and Myagdi. In both districts, ACN is working in partnership with local churches and Christian communities.

The situation in Rukum is particularly challenging, as many communities affected by landslides were also damaged by the earthquake which struck last November. Some families were still living in temporary shelters awaiting the reconstruction of homes and community buildings.

ACN’s distribution started a couple of weeks ago (see image), helping families whose properties, land or possessions have been damaged with packages of food and non-food supplies, plus mattresses and tarpaulins for households which have been more severely affected. They have also been providing supplies to pregnant women and new mothers.

In Myagdi, about 85 families have been helped with food packages, blankets, tarpaulins, and health kits. ACN provided this in a municipality where no other organisations had reached.

Your support will help people affected by floods or landslides this monsoon season.

A gift of £53 could provide food and hygiene package for a family in need. Alternatively, £23 could help support a new mother with a shawl, baby blanket and other key items.
