21 Oct Leprosy care in rural communities
INF’s leprosy work includes a range of community health projects reaching people in parts of Nepal where access to hospital care is limited.
A project in Bardiya and Kailali districts in the western reaches of Nepal is up and running thanks to German government funding in tandem with INF UK supporters. The Rights and Inclusion project empowers people affected by leprosy to access healthcare and make a positive contribution to family and community life. People can be referred for tests and treatment at INF’s Shining Hospital in Banke district.
“A blessing from God”

Chetram said: “We are a family of 10 and farming is our main source of income. Our eldest son went to the local health post to have a wound checked. He was treated [for leprosy] at Shining Hospital, then [INF] doctors visited our home for a check-up and five of us were referred to the hospital for treatment. We received proper care and medication there.
“Doctors and health services are not available nearby, making it difficult for poor families like ours to access proper medical care and medication.
“The doctors visited us several times and provided us with leprosy treatment and medicine. We are taking our medicines regularly and are doing well now. We were fortunate to be treated on time and getting doctors come to us felt like receiving a blessing from God.”
Moved by the support he received, Chetram has been encouraging neighbours to get checked if they notice similar symptoms. He even suggested that screening camps be brought to his area so others could be diagnosed early.
Local health workers and leaders recognise the impact of diagnosis and contact tracing to shed the light on the hidden extent of leprosy in rural communities. A local Ward Chairman also praised the Rights and Inclusion project’s initiative, calling it a valuable lifeline for poor and underserved families.
