02 Jun Earthquake damages school in Bajura
The district of Bajura in western Nepal has been hit by several earthquakes and aftershocks over recent months.
An earthquake in early May 2023, measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale, damaged a school building situated near the epicentre, which is part of the education project we’re supporting with Group of Helping Hands (SAHAS) Nepal.
The damage to four classrooms at Ghatala Basic School, in Gaumul Rural Municipality, has disrupted the education of 180 children. Due to the upcoming monsoon season, it will be impossible for the students to study outside in the playground.
Thanks to support for the Disaster Relief Fund we have been able to fund SAHAS’ construction of a Temporary Learning Centre, a safe and well-ventilated structure where the students’ education can continue during the months ahead. The new classrooms are due to be ready by the end of June.
